Altitude Problems

All too often visitors to high altitude destinations succumb to the affects of altitude sickness.  Unfortunately, there are no specific factors that predict who will be affected and who will not.  Regardless of age, sex or fitness level visitors to high elevation often display symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness Including:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Breathlessness
  • Irritability
  • Decreased appetite
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Problems in mental performance
  • General malaise.

The most successful way of improving human performance in high altitude areas with lowered oxygen levels is to add supplementary oxygen!

These are fairly common symptoms amongst individuals traveling to altitudes greater than 8,000 ft -- although this can occur at lower altitudes.  One of the most unpleasant factors of going to a high altitude is difficulty sleeping well, because this effects how you feel the next day.
